Do you have low back pain? Well, you’re in the right place.

My name is Dr. Jared Bornstein from NJ Health Performance in East Brunswick, New Jersey, and today we’re going to go over how shockwave therapy helps patients with low back pain.

Come on in.

Evaluating the Pain

We have our patient here today. She’s coming in with low back pain that’s localized right here.

She isn’t experiencing:

  • Radiculopathy
  • Pain going down the leg
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Sciatica

Although shockwave therapy can help with those conditions as well, today we’re treating localized low back pain.

How Shockwave Therapy Works

We’re going to use our shockwave machine.

We take this treatment tip and place it directly over the area where she’s experiencing pain.

The machine delivers high-energy acoustic shockwaves into the affected tissues.

While it’s typically a little loud during treatment, these shockwaves are designed to:

  • Break up scar tissue
  • Decrease pain
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Help stimulate tissue regeneration

Shockwave therapy can also be beneficial for conditions involving:

  • Muscle injuries
  • Ligament injuries
  • Disc herniations
  • Disc bulges

Before we begin, we’ll apply a small amount of ultrasound gel to the treatment area.

The Treatment Session

For today’s treatment, we’re going to treat both sides of the lower back.

We’ll deliver approximately 3,000 impulses, which is the recommended amount of energy for this area.

Throughout the treatment, we continue checking to make sure the patient is comfortable.

Part of a Comprehensive Treatment Plan

Shockwave therapy is typically performed in a series of 10 treatment sessions.

Today is this patient’s third session.

Depending on the diagnosis, she’ll also continue with any other therapies prescribed as part of her treatment plan, which may include:

  • Chiropractic care
  • Spinal decompression
  • Physical therapy
  • Acupuncture

Every treatment plan depends on the patient’s specific diagnosis and which tissues have been injured.

Our goal is to create the right combination of therapies to help you recover as quickly and effectively as possible.
