This is a model of a spinal disc.

Disc bulges and disc herniations are very common—in fact, they’re some of the most common conditions we see.

A spinal disc is a lot like a jelly donut. It has a tough outer layer with a softer, jelly-like center inside.

When you develop a disc bulge, pressure builds inside that “jelly donut,” causing the disc to expand and bulge outward.

Sometimes the bulge alone can cause pain. But if it presses on a nearby nerve, you may develop sciatica or pain that travels down your leg.

If the condition progresses further, the outer layer of the disc can tear. When that happens, the inner material pushes out and comes into contact with the nerve, creating similar symptoms—but often much more severe.

How We Treat Disc Bulges

For many patients, we begin with a combination of:

  • Chiropractic care
  • Physical therapy
  • Acupuncture

These treatments are often very effective and get the job done.

However, sometimes patients need an additional treatment, and that’s where spinal decompression comes in.

Come on in, and I’ll show you how it works.

How Spinal Decompression Works

During spinal decompression, we’ll gently strap you into the table.

The machine then applies a controlled pulling force to the spine, creating negative pressure within the disc.

The goal is to help draw the bulging or herniated disc material back inward, reducing pressure on the affected nerve.

Typically, we’re looking at anywhere from 10 to 20 treatments to achieve full resolution of the problem.

Choosing the Treatment Settings

Let me show you how we choose the treatment parameters.

This is what our treatment screen looks like.

We usually begin with Program One, which determines the pulling pattern used during treatment.

Most patients start with that program.

Treatment sessions are typically 15 minutes long.

Right now, the angle is set to zero because this patient has an L5-S1 disc bulge. Depending on the location of your disc bulge or herniation, we can adjust the angle to target the affected level more specifically.

Next, we set the pulling force.

For most patients, we start at 50 pounds and gradually increase the force over time based on the patient’s comfort and tolerance.

Once everything is set, we begin the treatment.

Part of a Comprehensive Treatment Plan

Once this patient finishes her spinal decompression session, she’ll continue with the rest of her prescribed treatment plan.

Depending on her condition, that may include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Chiropractic care
  • Acupuncture

Every treatment plan is customized based on your specific diagnosis and the tissues involved, allowing us to provide the most effective care possible for your recovery.
